Summer Program Specialist
Girls Wilderness Intern

FIELD INSTRUCTOR CONTRACTS
Passages Northwest has begun accepting applications for female Field Instructors for the program year 2008. Hiring will occur in the winter of 2008. All courses are based out of Seattle, WA.

We contract Field Instructors on a course-by-course basis, including paid time for both planning and debriefing. Successful applicants must attend 4-day training from June 5th to 8th, 2008.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Experience working with girls/women from diverse backgrounds, especially making the transference of a wilderness experience relevant to the everyday lives of urban youth

  • Experience teaching outdoor skills and facilitating groups (30 field days or equivalent)

  • Good judgment and professional experience in at least one of the following program elements: backpacking, sea kayaking, or rock climbing

  • Institutional rock climbing or sea kayaking background strongly encouraged to apply

  • Current certification as Wilderness First Responder or W-EMT and CPR required for Lead Instructors, Wilderness First Aid for Assistant Instructors

  • Safe driving record

  • Strong group facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to create an inclusive environment

  • Experience with Social Justice Curriculum

  • Experience leading creative/expressive and/or environmental education activities

  • Women of color strongly encouraged to apply

    SUMMER PROGRAM SPECIALIST
    Passages Northwest is accepting applications for the role of Summer Program Specialist for summer 2008. All courses are based out of Seattle, WA. Review of resumes will begin January 7, 2008.

    This is a contract position for 35-40 paid days June-August including paid time for both planning and debriefing. Must attend a 4-day training from June 5th to 8th, 2008.

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Experienced Field Instructor—experience teaching outdoor skills and facilitating groups (50+ field days)

  • Traditional and sport lead climbing ability at 5.8 grade

  • Comfortable moving groups over 3rd/4th class terrain

  • Experience managing institutional rock sites, including top rope climbing and rappelling

  • Experience working with girls and women from diverse backgrounds, including social justice curriculum and making the transference of a wilderness experience relevant to the everyday lives of urban youth

  • Comfortable with rock site rescue and able to take the lead in emergency situations

  • Current certification as Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or W-EMT and CPR required

  • Safe driving record

  • Women of color strongly encouraged to apply

  • The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong group facilitation, communication, mentorship and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to create an inclusive environment and an understanding of the issues facing adolescent girls

  • Excellent judgment and decision making ability, strong risk management skills

  • Comfort facilitating creative and/or environmental education activities

  • Job responsibilities and duties:
  • Course Direct rock-climbing and backpacking courses, managing instructor prep and post days, supporting field staff on- and off-course, and monitoring overall course quality and safety

  • Provide resources, tools, and information to instructors regarding course areas, student needs, special circumstances, course elements, paperwork, gear, food, etc.

  • Serve as Rock Site Specialist through management of institutional rock sites

  • Mentor field staff in rock site management, teaching of skills, following policies, group facilitation, and other relevant areas of strength

  • Work with the Program Assistant to support course logistics

  • Collaborate with other staff in course design, professional development of field staff, curriculum, logistics

  • Serve as on-call emergency support as needed, including leading any rescues or evacuations

    GIRLS WILDERNESS INTERN
    Passages Northwest is accepting applications for the role of Girls Wilderness Intern for summer 2008. The Girls Wilderness Program Intern supports Passages Northwest’s programs and wilderness courses through logistical support, volunteer coordination and some administrative work. This is an excellent position for someone considering a career in outdoor education. This person is invited to attend a four day retreat and staff training in early June, which is a wealth of information for someone interested in outdoor education. There is also potential to serve as a paid field intern on a backpacking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, or combination course. College credit is a possibility. The position is based in Seattle, WA.

    This is a summer volunteer position beginning in early June and ending in late August 2008 (dates are flexible). Hours are approximately 15-30+ hours/week, dependent on summer course schedule. Applicants must live in or close to Seattle for the duration of the internship. Review of resumes will begin January 21, 2008.

    The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong organizational skills/detail oriented

  • Ability to do repetitive tasks and to see projects through to completion
  • Comfort/willingness working with diverse populations

  • Highly autonomous

  • Experience working with outdoor equipment and food a plus

  • Job responsibilities and duties:
  • Supports Program Assistant with course logistics including food purchasing and packing, issuing/de-issuing gear to students, gear repair/maintenance and inventory, packing course equipment

  • Supports with volunteer management

  • Provides administrative support for programs as needed (data entry from course evaluations, database input, mailings, etc.)
